Volunteers are needed to help assemble hundreds of bicycles to be gifted to local children in need. The bike build happening 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 8 is part of the eighth annual Scott Campbell Christmas Promise, which aims to raise enough money to buy 800 bicycles.
So far, Waste Connections and community donors have raised over $55,000 to purchase 700 bikes and helmets. Cyndi Holloway, with Waste Connections, said a $50 donation buys a bike and helmet. People can make donations to the J. Scott Campbell Foundation at the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington either online at www.cfsww.org/donate or by check.
Holloway said she’s expecting at least 100 volunteers at the bike build held at SEH Inc., 18110 S.E. 34th St. Local bikes shops and bicycle groups inspect the assembled bikes to ensure they’re safe for kids to use. YWCA Clark County, Vancouver Public Schools, the state Department of Social and Health Services and Santa’s Posse are among the organizations that receive the bikes, many of which are given to foster youth.
Volunteers can enjoy breakfast burritos in the morning and a lunch of hotdogs, chips and soda in the afternoon.
Last year, the event was renamed the Scott Campbell Christmas Promise in memory of the late civic leader and Waste Connections employee.
